Hay!

Today we went to get some hay to mulch the garden with. We arrived expecting nicely stacked hay bales to choose from... wrong. it was more like.. dig through the hay looking for an intact bale..lol.. E & E had a blast playing in it all though and we managed to find 12 large intact hay bales. I spent the rest of the afternoon mulching my garden. All the spring flowers look so much prettier now..lol

We also needed some hay for some new additions that will be arriving tommorrow ............ ;)

Of course I never expected a photo opportunity and left my camera at home (grrr) so here some pics courtesy of Dh's phone camera!

Passing on a good thing

These are the yummiest chocolate biscuits I have ever made. I dare you to stop at one.......... the only thing I did differently was rolled teaspoon sized balls in stead of tablespoon .. if you do this you can eat twice as many....

My garden

I've always dabbled with gardening, there's something very theraputic to me about digging my hands through the dirt, turning the soil.. planting seeds and seedlings... watching them grow. Now with the insdie of the house done I am getting more serious in the garden..


Last year I planted mint and was able to make mint sauce from it.. yum. It died off over winter but has sprouted back recently.

and this is my herb garden.. currently its housing parsely, rosemary, oregano, chives and the garlic that dh's mum planted when she was here. I want to try planting some ginger, apparenlty its really easy to grow.


Silverbeet


A couple of weeks ago I planted peas and here they are. I've never grown them before so will be interesting to see how they go.


Brocolli, never grown this before either but I grew some cauliflower over winter so it cant be that hard..lol


Capsicum.. we eat a lot of these over summer with salad.

I'm still to plant carrots, cucumber, tomatoes and zucchinis, just waiting for the weather to get a little warm.

and if we get sick of eating all the vegetables.. I have the fruit taken care off too ;)

The apple tree I planted here is budding. Not sure if we will see any apples this year though. We also have a very old nectarine tree which produces the yummiest fruit.



Strawberries.. that I finally transplanted so they are all in one patch instead of scattered everywhere in various pots.


and raspberries. I got the raspberry canes from my dad, they are from canes that were originally in my nana's garden and I can still remember picking and eating them with cream and a sprinkling of sugar... yummmmm


We are also in the process of sourcing some chooks! We eat alot of eggs and I have always wanted some chooks and I think it will be fun for the kids as well not to mention the great fertiliser they produce ;)

We are having a lazy Saturday at home.

Last night we joined with others to help friends celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary last night. Congratulations Dawn and John, you are such an inspiration.. 50 years .. WOW such an achievement.

Anyway.. before we left for the celebrations we loaded and turned on the dishwasher.. some hours later when we got home.. it was still going.. humming away the way it does when it is pumping water... uh oh. I secretly began having visions of getting a nice shiny new dishwasher but the ever clever Dh pulled it out and fixed this morning.. bummer.. ;) So it lives to wash another day.

And that is about as exciting as the day gets I am afraid, its raining and I have grand plans to stay inside and cook, so here a few pics form the week..

So thought I would make some cupcakes today. Here they are cooking.. all 30 of them.



Here they are cooling, all 30 of them. Left them there while I went to pick Ethan up from kindy.

Does she look guilty?? Thats probably because she ATE 14 of those 30 cupcakes! Lesson learn't for today.. remember to shut kitchen door when leaving house with cupcakes cooling on the bench....


oh and no sign of the paper cases they were in.... yet...

With the kids on two weeks school holiday things have been busy. We took a little trip up the coast for a few days to visit Grandad and some friends. The kids got to see Ratatouille and we visited a science centre.

Jumping off the sand dunes was the highlight of the trip..lol

We had the willow tree in our backyard lopped on the weekend.. who knew our friends son was a qualified tree lopper and just happened to have all his gear with him..lol
I do love our willow tree but it gets messy with falling twiggy branches if it gets to big, mind you all the leaf it drops in autumn makes great mulch for the garden!
Not sure that it gets this messy though!

and what do boys do with lots of tree limbs and branches lying around?

You build a teepee of course!


We also finally traded little old wooden outdoor setting that has faithfully served our growing family for the past 5 yrs for a BIGGER new outdoor setting. I love it.. the table is 5ft square and fits us all so comfortably around it. We love eating outdoors in the warmer months this setting will make for some much more comfortable meals.


and the part I love most about a spring is all the beautiful flowers starting to bloom.

2 more days and I will have the kids home for two weeks. Normally I would be dreading school holidays but I am actually looking forward to a break from being the family taxi service! In the meantime I have been busy organising little spots here at home that were long overdue for some sorting out.

Now that I am cooking more my recipe books got a long overdue sort out. No more untidy pile of books!


Dh's shed was next.. Now I can find everything..lol



and of course I have been cooking!
